People need water to survive, plain and simple. Well so do plants. In fact, water forms over 90% of a plants body structure. Knowing that, it makes sense why water plays so many key roles in plant functions.

So how does a plant use water? Unlike photosynthesis  which occurs in the leaves of a plant, water begins at the roots. All of the different roles that water plays is directly connected to the way water moves through a plant. Water is absorbed through the roots of a plant and travels straight up the plant through what is called the xylem, pronounced zahy-luhm. Water follows the xylem through the entire plant until it reaches very small pores called stomata, these are usually found in leaves. The water then evaporates into our atmosphere. This constant flow of water through the plant is what allows all of the below functions to occur.
